The PSU Digital Research and Innovation Institute has been working jointly with the private sector in research and development in the field of telecommunications. The most recent example of this collaboration is a joint study with Advanced Info Services Plc. (AIS) to test 5G technology in practical situations that meet the needs of the industry and benefit people's lives. The study serves as an important cross-cutting technology platform that will support the Bioeconomy, Circular Economy and Green Economy (BCG) Model, and will lead to rapid and sustainable solutions to spatial problems. To highlight the details of this project, the two institutions have jointly organized an event titled “AIS moves forward to bring digital innovation to enhance the level of strength” on 16 August 2019. The event emphasized the modern-day importance of digital technology in country development, with a particular focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI), where interconnected communication is key. Recognizing this importance, the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation will utilize the research platform innovation for area-based development, such as the Thailand 4.0 Southern Border initiative.
Dr. Suvit Maesincee, Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, pointed out that the event’s activities are a great opportunity to witness the progress of Thai technology and innovation, with Prince of Songkla University working closely with a recognized agency in the private sector. He explained that the unmanned vehicles featured at the event are the result of successful research and development in communication and AI, V2X (Vehicle to everything), Smart pole and 5G – technological features that serve as the foundation of the “Smart City Model on Campus”, a government-approved and supported project to create a prototype of an innovative city-based intelligent system at Hat Yai Campus. Dr. Suvit then reaffirmed that Prince of Songkla University is an important factor in the development of the country.
PSU President Asst. Prof. Dr. Niwat Kaewpradub further elaborated, explaining the role of the PSU Digital Research and Innovation Institute (DRii) in carrying out innovation and digital technology development projects in IoT (Internet of Things), Big Data, and Artificial Intelligence systems, all under the umbrella of “Smart City Model on Campus”. Other defining features of the project include the self-adjusting Smart Streetlight system, the installation of digital data communication systems via cloud networks, digital signage, and the development of electric unmanned vehicles controlled remotely through V2X. Academic developments also play an important role in the project, enabling the continuous transfer of digital knowledge to students, lecturers, and the industry.
As the highlight of the event, Dr. Suvit demonstrated the 1st 5G Live Remote-controlled Electric Vehicle, located at PSU Hat Yai Campus, by operating the driverless car from the Office of the Higher Education Commission Building, Sri Ayudhya Road, Bangkok.
