Prince of Songkla University, together with Universiti Utara, Malaysia, and Universitas Airlangga, Indonesia, cordially invites undergraduate students from universities in ASEAN+3 countries to participate in the “ASEAN Intervarsity Youth Competition 2022”. The competition includes a Speech Contest, a Science Inspiration Talk, and an ASEAN Quiz. Registration is open between 15-31 July 2022, and contestants may win prizes of up to 10,000 Baht.
The ASEAN Intervarsity Youth Competition, formerly the PSU ASEAN Youth Forum, was organized for the first time in September 2019. The Forum was an initiative of PSU’s president, Asst. Prof. Dr. Niwat Keawpradub, and is intended to enhance the competitiveness of young people who are likely to guide ASEAN’s future. The enterprise has benefited from much input from the Consul General of Malaysia in Songkhla, HE Mr. Mohammad Afundi Abu Baka, and immense support from HE Mr. Fachry Sulaiman, Consul of the Republic of Indonesia in Songkhla. Past activities have included a speech contest, an ASEAN quiz, and project development.
The competition's objectives are: 1) To promote and foster youth leadership and enhance the public speaking skills of students in ASEAN universities. 2) To raise the awareness and understanding of ASEAN issues among young citizens who will guide regional development in the future. 3) To form and strengthen good relationships among young people and universities in ASEAN + 3 countries.
The community of Southeast Asian nations have formally committed to achieving United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. So far, progress has been sadly lacking both within and between the countries of the region. The fundamental issues causing this slowness are a lack of awareness and concern by its people. The ASEAN Intervarsity Youth Competition 2022, “Youth Engagement Towards SDGs in the ASEAN Community”, hopes to address these concerns by offering a platform for students to act as ASEAN citizens and suggest innovative solutions to the challenges of SDG engagement. Their ideas will be presented through a speech contest entitled “Youth Engagement Towards SDGs in the ASEAN Community”.
Undergraduate students from ASEAN + 3 universities, are encouraged to participate, and this year we are extending our invitation to pre-University students to join the ASEAN Quiz. The winner of the speech contest will receive the Dr. Thanat Khoman Award, while the winners of the ASEAN Quiz will receive the Dr. Surin Pitsuwan Award, and the PSU President Award, along with prizes worth up to 10,000 Baht.
